|These are a few tips to help our environment. Please add your own if you have a good tip to share.
1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost.
Adding waste vegetable scraps and yard waste material to a compost heap will reduce the amount of garbage in your weekly pickup. Reuse your plastic bags as garbage can liners or bring your groceries home in a box or an eco-friendly shopping bag. Recycle the box. Participate in the village's recycling program. Your compost heap will make rich soil to use in your garden or flower pots.
2. Conserve water.
Don't let faucets run. Run the dishwasher only when it is full. Plant drought-tolerant garden plants. Wash dishes by hand in a basin, then use the dish water for outdoor gardens.
3. Lower your thermostat in the winter. Raise it in the summer.
Wear a sweater in the winter and short sleeves in the summer. This saves energy and money.
4. Plant a tree. Plant a garden.
Teach your children to love nature by letting them help to plant a tree. Teach them to plant a garden, watch it grow and harvest the produce.
5. Volunteer for the environment.
Don't litter. If you see litter when walking, pick it up and put it in a trash receptacle. If you see someone littering report it to law enforcement. Get a license plate if possible or a description of the automobile. Don't throw your items in someone else's dumpster without their permission. To report abuse of the litter law, please call (337) 369-3711, the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Dispatch Office.
